BirdSwell Surf Trip: San Pancho, Mexico December 2009

For Christmas 2009, we traveled to San Pancho, Mexico for a week. We scored warm and clean head to shoulder high swell.

We heard a lot of great things about Sayulita, but the holiday crowds took us by surprise. We surfed Sayulita a couple times and decided to drive further to an excellent break called, Punta de Mita aka: La Lancha. When we arrived there the rights were amazing and consistent. It was beautiful and less crowded. The rides were really long and great for longboarding. I also saw a whale breach and also a whale’s tail…it was definitely a highlight of the trip!

We surfed Punta de Mita a lot, but we decided to go off the beaten path to see if there were any other breaks that we were missing. Low and behold, we found a couple very local and great secret spots. There were no other surfers, and the waves were breaking. We unpacked the boards and hit the waves right away out of excitement. We surfed there for two days and we even played some games with the local kids.

For a Christmas present, we got a water proof video camera and we were able to test it out. It worked really well. We also had an onshore camera to take some video. This is the first time we have ever filmed our surfing adventures. (I think we might continue this new tradition! It was really fun!) We are putting together two short films of the trip. Keep your eyes peeled for them! We are not done with them yet but they will be posted soon.

We were planning on staying in Sayulita, but all the places were rented out so we lucked out and stayed in San Pancho at a villa called, Villa Roca. It was absolutely amazing! It had an infinity pool and marble everywhere. It was up on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Apparently the place is owned by a New England surfer (like ourselves), Symon Cousens, who owns two surf shops in Rhode Island.

The food is fresh and delicious. The tacos al pastor are off the hook! Personally, my favorite. Since we had an amazing kitchen, we cooked fresh fish and produce and cooked some amazing Mexican dinners. The all around vibe in Mexico is very relaxed, laid back and friendly.

Our pictures from the trip are posted on Flicker. Check them out:
